The Stupids (1996) is a goofy, light-hearted family comedy that leans fully into absurd humor. The movie follows the Stupid family—yes, that’s their real name—who aren’t exactly the brightest bunch. When the father, Stanley Stupid, becomes convinced that someone is stealing their garbage, he drags his wife and two kids on a wild, chaotic adventure to uncover a “mysterious conspiracy.”
What follows is a string of over-the-top misunderstandings, silly mistakes, and comically exaggerated logic that somehow leads them into the middle of a real criminal scheme—completely by accident. The Stupids are hilariously confident in their own misguided ideas, and that’s where most of the film’s humor comes from.
It’s one of those movies that doesn’t take itself seriously at all. The jokes are intentionally ridiculous, making it feel like a live-action cartoon. If you like slapstick humor, exaggerated characters, and pure nonsense fun, The Stupids delivers exactly that.
